Potty-Training ~ Day One

Emma has officially begun potty-training! YAY!

We have had a potty chair since she was 18 months old because she started asking to go when D or I used the bathroom. She is very familiar with the entire concept but has been saying "no thank you" when we ask if she would like to try to go.

Yesterday she was telling me exactly how the process worked, and I had decided I was done changing icky toddler poppy diapers! Today we were at Target and we made a stop by the toddler underwear section. I started pointing out all of the princess, Tinkerbell, and Doc McStuffins underwear and said she could pick whichever she wanted. She then leaned forward and exclaimed "JAKE AND PIRATES!!"

I looked behind me and sure enough, the boys section had Jake and the Neverland Pirates underwear. I said "Emma, those are for boys honey. Wouldn't you like some princess undies?"

She said no. She wanted Jake.

So we got Jake :)

We have had 2 successful potty-times followed by a jelly bean!

2 accidents and 1 horrified toddler.
But we are working on understanding that accidents are okay and they happen!
Poor girl gets traumatized.

Wish us luck!

What I Wore: Mommy Edition link-up!

 photo 62baf70c-3920-4da4-a95a-87a4350b6add.png

This link-up was inspired by the "What I Wore Wednesday" posts that everyone does each week.

One day I loved my outfit, but I didn't style it completely because I wasn't going anywhere.

See, I have been making an effort to put on cute outfits as many days as I can each week for myself, but also for my husband. I went out at the end of the year and bought some cute things that made me feel chic and "hip".

As a mother, it is really hard to do these "What I Wore" posts when I don't go anywhere! I wanted to show off my outfit but I hadn't accessorized, done my hair, or chosen shoes.

SO, this link-up was born. Each Wednesday the link-up will open and will stay open until the following Tuesday night. That way if you don't post on Wednesday exactly, you still have the rest of the week to link-up with everyone! I know that I have a hard time remembering to post on a certain day, and with kiddos it's almost impossible to predict how your day will go.

Every picture I post will be raw and real. Hair not styled? Who cares! Is your face make-up-less? Mine too! No shoes? No problem!

Let's embrace our mommy-hood and have fun showing how we have pulled ourselves together (or not) that day.

{TODAY} Emma, Audrey, and I went to the zoo with friends. I dressed cute and then I got home and took off my nice jeans and threw on yoga pants. So this is what you get ;)

I styled my hair with a Paul Mitchell curling serum and did light makeup!

My top is a crocheted brown number from Old Navy that I got from ThredUp (if you've never tried their consignment site I highly recommend it!), and I layered a black tank underneath. I wore my Sam and Bobby jeans (who are they?) and felt super cute.

And guess what? I actually wore shoes.

My very loved and worn Merona sandals from Target.

What did you wear today? Or this week :D

Link up ladies!

Let Them Play

I am always telling Emma she needs to pick up a mess before she makes a new one. Some days I'm lax on this but that means I let two or three messes happen before I start prompting her to pick up some of it.

Today I started getting frustrated because she was dumping bin after bin and pulling out every toy in sight. My new "mom-of-two" Type A personality started to go crazy. In an apartment laden with unpacked boxes after a move this past weekend, toy messes make it feel all the more chaotic.

But then I stepped back and looked at it from a different perspective.

The end of 2013 involved the birth of our second child, which ultimately laid me up and stole my energy. Emma began to have a lot more TV/iPad/iPhone than usual. This kid LOVES her learning apps and PBSkids shows. I used to have to hide our phones and the iPad so she wouldn't be reminded to ask, just in hopes that she would busy herself with actual toys.

And now I'm getting frustrated because she's playing with too many.

See the issue here?

Yes, I completely believe in teaching your child to clean up after themselves (a disclaimer I'm throwing in here so no one thinks I'm letting my child grow up without learning responsibility and respect for things), but in these times of technology driven success I say....

Let them play.

I will answer on my next blog post this week.

One of those nights..

This is one of those posts you write when you feel down, and tired. I've been doing so much getting ready for the move and having a sleepless week while Emma was sick that I am starting to feel that "drained" feeling engulfing my body.

This is one of those posts that you write now and regret later, because you end up looking needy and whiny.

This is one of those posts that you hope certain people will read and encourage you because of it, but you know others will see it too and you aren't sure you want to be this raw with everyone.

This is one of those posts that seems to have a trend of sentence starters. A person feels cooler when they write like that. More collected and artsy.

This is one of those times when you realize that you're going on and on about nothing, yet between each line there's text that the reader can't see.

This is one of those times when you're grateful you have an outlet like a blog because you can pour out everything and nothing and you know that someone somewhere will relate to you. Someone has been where you are. You are not alone.

ONE YEAR BLOGOVERSARY + STARBUCKS GIVEAWAY!

This has been an amazing, fun year! I started blogging because I was lonely, honestly. I was in the middle of starting an Etsy business and I got involved with some social media outlets and noticed a lot of people also blogged. The idea of building a community of friends like me got me so excited I couldn't wait to get going! I was very impatient and wanted everything to flourish right away.

My first blogging name was the name of my business, "Top This by Leanne". That name gained a lot of followers and I had a wonderful time interacting with all of you! I got so sick with my pregnancy in 2013 that I took a break until I could focus on my blog more. When I came back after a couple of months I had decided not to continue my crocheting business because I just didn't have the time. Between school, work, motherhood, wifeyhood, and being a human being, there wasn't time to work on lengthy projects. I could barely write a blog post! I then decided that since my business was no longer, I should change my blog name so that it had a meaning. I went with "Sock Monkey Momma". Initially I adored it and thought it encompassed everything I was and wrote about.

As time went on I realized it didn't have the class that I wanted to emanate from my blog. It didn't sound versatile enough to last me years and years, and to reach a variety of people like I intended to. Yes, I am a mother, but I hope to be even more than that in my daily life and blog voice.

Hence, "Being Jane" was born. I think I am happy now! I have a huge passion for Jane Austen novels/films and thoroughly enjoy any book or movie from that time period. I mean, my girls are named Emma Jane and Audrey Elizabeth. Just last week I noticed that their middle names are the two eldest daughters in Pride and Prejudice, and they have their coloring! This was done partially on purpose, but I didn't have any control over their coloring ;)

I hope you'll take a moment to look back on some of my favorite posts from this year!

Now please celebrate with me and enter my "One Year Blogoversary" giveaway below!

I am SO excited to be able to team up with some great bloggy friends and bring the opportunity to win a $50 Starbucks gift card!! I mean, you can NEVER have too much Starbucks. Good luck!

11 Questions

Lena over at Lena B, Actually challenged us readers to answer her questions on our blog! Under my answers I am posting 11 questions for YOU to answer! I would love to get to know you!

You can either answer within the comments or make a blog post and share the link in the comments below.

Here goes:

1. When did you last laugh? Today. My girls crack me up. Emma never ceases to say something well-beyond her years, and Audrey has the biggest grin after she wakes up and sees my face.. it's priceless.

2. Which store would you choose to max out  your credit card? H&M. Hands down.

3. What's under your bed? Nothing, for our bed is on the floor.

4. What do you consider your best physical feature? Based on what I've heard over the years, my eyes.

5. What is your best childhood memory? Any with my dad before he died. One that stands out is the last day we had just the two of us, down in Old Town in San Diego, CA. I went to work with him that day, and we left early and walked around Old Town. We bought a bag of jelly beans at our favorite classic candy store and he gave me all of the black licorice ones because they made him cringe. It was lovely just walking around with him. I remember thinking fondly of our time together in the moment, not knowing it would be our last father/daughter time together.

6. Grab the book nearest you, turn to page 18 and copy the fourth sentence here: "I then completed the circle, which was actually more of a square, by heading north on South Capitol Street."

7. Seen anything weird lately? Honestly, I couldn't tell you. My life is fairly routine these days so nothing stands out!

8. If you could change one thing about your home, without worry or expense, what would you do? I would get all of the organizational tools needed to make each cabinet/closet space fully functional and neat.

9. What is your favorite time of day? Truly? One-on-one time with my girls. Whether it be when Emma is in bed, or when Audrey is napping, I love those little moments giving all of my attention to their little faces.

10. Do you believe in love at first sight? Not necessarily. I believe in love at first meeting, or love at first hang out... because that is what happened to me. You can read about it here.

11. Tell me something about you most people don't know. I have 7 sisters and 1 brother. And no, we're not Mormon :)

And now you get to answer my questions:

1. Are you allergic to anything?

2. What is your favorite clothing company?

3. Where do you go when you are alone and need a break?

4. What is your favorite hot drink?

5. Polka-dots or stripes?

6. Have you ever seen Downton Abbey? If not, why?!

7. What is your favorite broadway show?

8. Where do you keep your paper towels?

9. Have you ever gone on a road trip? Where?

10. Is your hair your natural color?

11. Summer or winter?

Looking forward to reading your answers! Thanks for playing along!

Engaged After Five Days!

It all started on March 27, 2008.....

Leanne was a new server training at Applebees when she met Daniel, who had been working there for 2 months. The two had encountered each other several times in the workplace, but had never struck up a conversation. While standing around by the server's station that evening, Leanne heard Daniel mention something about living in San Diego. They started talking and found out they had both attended the same churches out there, and been homeschooled growing up.

Then, while filling the sugar caddies in their stations, Daniel asked Leanne if she wanted to come over to his place that night and watch a movie with his roommate and his roommate’s girlfriend. Leanne said "Sure", not quite knowing what to expect... was he interested in her? She just wasn't sure.

After work the group drove to Blockbuster and rented "Accepted". They drove to Daniel's apartment, and the minute the door opened Leanne looked around, and observing the spotless living room said, "What can I touch?” Daniel then gave a tour, and Leanne was awestruck by the number of black and white photos of old movies stars that he had. He had the same taste as her! Leanne then took to perusing his 'video store' of movies, and found he had "RENT". Needless to say, they watched that instead. The minute they sat on that black leather couch, there was a driving force that pulled them together. Daniel put his arm around Leanne, and she settled in. In Daniel's words, "It just was right."

The next day (Friday) at work Leanne wasn't sure how serious Daniel was about what happened the night before. For all she knew she was just 'another girl' in his life. So she proceeded to be casual during the shift, and not come across too forward. Well, let's just say that curiosity got the best of her. She approached Daniel on his way back to the kitchen and said, "So, about last night... was that just a... thing? Cause I don't want it to be a thing... I mean *mindless jabber*.....” Daniel said "come here", and took her to the walk-in freezer in the back. And kissed her.
There was her answer!

That night Leanne got cut from the floor early. She got a text from Daniel later that said that his roommate had just been arrested. Daniel was in a confused state of panic. He had trusted him and he had been lied to, and left without a rent payment.
Leanne had just enough money in her account for the other half of the rent. On Sunday she coerced Daniel into letting her move in, saying that it was just perfect. And that Monday she did.

On April 1, 2008, Leanne and Daniel were sitting on the couch talking about dreams, futures, and goals. The conversation took a turn to where they were going in their relationship.... what they wanted out of it.... and before they knew it 2 hours had gone by, and Daniel said, "Did we just get engaged?!", and Leanne said, "I think we did!"

The very next week Leanne was kept out all day long by her friend Kara. They got their nails done, went to lunch, and did some dress shopping. Towards the end of the day Leanne was very tired and antsy. She wanted to go home! But Kara talked her into going to dinner. The entire time Leanne was texting Daniel telling him how annoyed she was and how badly she wanted to leave. FINALLY Kara said it was time to go, and she drove Leanne home.

She opened the door to the apartment, and was taken completely by surprise. Daniel was on one knee at the door, with a ring in his hand. Friends and family were gathered around the living room, all watching. Leanne had no idea that she had been purposely kept out of the house all day so that Daniel could plan the surprise!

And of course, she said yes.
